Podcast excerpt 17:03-20:41 (3:38)

This 5-episode podcast series investigates how sea-level rise, racial inequity and housing are intertwined in coastal Norfolk, VA. It explores the deep history of how two major forces - the water, and the need for housing -- have interacted for Black people living in Norfolk, a city whose population is 43% Black. This episode explores the relationship between the dream of resilience and the realities of gentrification and sea-level rise in the form of the Ohio Creek Project, one of the biggest infrastructure projects Norfolk has invested in to mitigate the effects of sea-level rise.

This is an excerpt of one of over 100 oral history interviews I recorded with residents of Southeast Newport News and Norfolk, Virginia, where coal dust from export terminals has caused environmental injustices for over a century.

In my 2024 short film VOROBOROS, which I wrote, directed and scored, sound creates a space for imagining a livable way of being. The content of this film emerges from the chronic sensation of self-sacrifice by self-consumption, in order to survive an extraction-based capitalist society.  The story of eating oneself to survive is told through mythology, biology, history and fantasy. In the attached excerpt, sound is a creative force that prods the listener towards adapting to oppression to continue to survive, grow and create.

live score  ·  sound design  ·  composition  ·  performance  ·  collaboration

In the performance The Exact Right Amount of Force, which I directed as well as composing and performing a live score, sound creates a space of accumulating pressure. Shimmering arpeggios spiderweb cracks throughout a wall of silence, opening space between bricks of oppression. These spaces become footholds to pry oppressive forces apart, making space to sink our roots into the mortar and grow to become something new and strange.

The movement-based performance was generated in part by the performers through improvisations that I guided verbally and sonically, around our personal and collective experiences of political organizing, authoritarian architecture, direct action, police violence, grief and transformation.
