Above: Wading Between Two Titans show art, by me.
This limited podcast series investigates how sea-level rise, racial inequity and housing are intertwined in coastal Norfolk, VA. It explores the deep history of how two major forces - the water, and the need for housing -- have interacted for African Americans living in Norfolk, a city whose population is 43% African American. Sometimes, the water has supported Black people's ability to house themselves; at other times, the water made their housing options unhealthy, unsafe and even unlivable.
Will those in a position to flee the rising tides gentrify the higher elevated neighborhoods of those who are ill-equipped to do the same? Can the most marginialized residents successfully compete with the simultaneous rise of sea levels and home costs? And if they cannot, where will they go?
This episode explores the relationship between the dream of resilience and the realities of gentrification and sea-level rise in the form of the Ohio Creek Project, one of the biggest infrastructure projects Norfolk has invested in to mitigate the effects of sea-level rise.
